Concept
Yumeno Goto is an emerging painter born and raised in Tokyo, and currently based in Kamakura. Referring to her practice, she writes, “The purpose of magic is to recreate myths. What I do is not imitation, rather I channel inspiration. In other words, I recreate myths through my painting.”
The whole of this process is, to her, witchcraft. These myths are reconstructed from the polytheistic world of European antiquity and the world believed in by modern witches, who have revived the worship of goddesses. Goto also holds the stance that her practice of drawing fantasy worlds is not meant to invite the viewer over into “the other side,” but rather to try to bring them into “this side” of the world. When you stare at the bark of a tree in darkness for long enough, you’ll begin to see colors that were previously invisible. Goto seeks to paint exactly these colors.
