Miyu Yamada “Nowhere Land”

biscuit gallery, a contemporary art commercial gallery originally established on Shoto Culture Street in Shibuya and now based in Shinjuku, is pleased to present a solo exhibition “Nowhere Land” by contemporary artist Miyu Yamada.

The exhibition will run from Saturday, October 11 to Sunday, October 26.

On the opening day, Saturday, October 11, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, the artist will be present for the opening reception.

“Nowhere Land” Acrylic, sand, and mixed media on canvas 2025 162cm×130.3cm

This exhibition, the artist’s first solo show in two years, will also be the first to be held at biscuit gallery’s new Shinjuku space following its relocation.

The “right answer” changes depending on one’s point of view and never settles into a single truth. It’s precisely within that fluctuation that my own sensibilities—and my works—seem to take shape.

Since moving to Tokyo, I’ve found myself seeking places that offer a quiet sense of calm. I realized I was looking for the same thing during my travels last year. I visited Shasta in the United States, and some of my works were painted under the influence of its landscape; yet I don’t intend to invest meaning in any particular name or place. Rather, if there is “a place like Shasta”—a place of repose—somewhere within one’s heart, perhaps we can face anything. That is the feeling I carry.

The boundary between myself and others is sometimes blurred, and I hold relief, anxiety, and fear all at once. Even so, I want to gather these not as irony or denial, but as warmth.

Making work is not something that exists outside everyday life; it gains meaning by holding its ground against life. Our lives can never be completely separate from society. Just as the soil in fields connects across their plots, I too am woven into society. In today’s world, where excessive connection and isolation occur simultaneously, and in urban life exposed to constant comparison and the gaze of others, we inevitably find ourselves swaying toward isolation yet wrapped within society. The constant question is how much distance to keep, and how to engage.

Artmaking is often interpreted as a message to society. For me, however, it is closer to a letter or postcard addressed to someone in particular. By leaving behind a small voice, a small thought, I hope it will reach someone I have yet to meet.

Miyu Yamada

Miyu Yamada | 山田 美優

Born in Tokyo, 1994
Graduated from the Faculty of Law, Aoyama Gakuin University

Yamada creates works that project those who live in the interstices of time and society. Her practice captures the unique sense of floating and elusiveness felt by contemporary people, employing sand-like materials to express beings that exist between the realms of the urban and the natural.

Her practice unfolds in two main series: works based on drawings in which she builds up lines in relief, and works created with pastel.

The creatures that appear in her works are, at once, reflections of herself observing a rapidly changing society and representations of the viewers themselves.

【Solo exhibition】Nagisa Tsuji「nekis」

biscuit gallery will be hosting “nekis,” a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Nagisa Tsuji, commencing on Saturday, October 18, 2025.

There will be an opening party on October 18th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, and the artist will be in attendance.

“nekis” is Tsuji Nagisa’s second solo exhibition and her first at biscuit gallery.
The exhibition will be centered around her previously released “nekis series.”

“Nekis” is a work of fiction that treats the Winged Victory of Samothrace as if it were a single “species,” such as amphibians or birds, this species is named “nike’ which are then collected as specimens.

I go out into the field to photograph them, akin to bird-watching. What is collected are then mounted as specimens and added to a collection.

The accompanying landscape photographs serve as captions explaining where the specimen was found, or as a backdrop for photographs that appear to document its behavior.

These specimens invite us not only to contemplate the fictional life-form “nike”, but also to observe what kinds of material layers make up a collage. Supported by the thin needle is a mere piece of paper that looks as if it could fly away, and the shadow it casts is also opaque and flimsy.

These works, from different times and places, are made to overlap within the single plane of a panel.

※Note: The Winged Victory of Samothrace is an ancient Greek sculpture representing the goddess of victory (Louvre Museum).

Please look forward to the exhibitions featuring the emerging artist Nagisa Tsuji.

「doors」- biscuit gallery farewell exhibition in Shibuya

biscuit gallery, a contemporary art commercial gallery located on Shoto Bunkamura Street in Shibuya, Tokyo, will hold its final exhibition at its current location titled biscuit gallery farewell exhibition in Shibuya “doors”, starting Saturday, May 10, 2025.

This exhibition marks the last show to be held at the biscuit building in Shoto, Shibuya.

「doors」- biscuit gallery farewell exhibition in Shibuya

Opened in March 2021, biscuit gallery (located in Shoto, Shibuya) will hold its final exhibition at the biscuit building.

Titled “doors”, this exhibition brings together a selection of artists who have previously exhibited at biscuit gallery, with a focus on those who have left a particularly strong impression. Many artists have been invited to participate in this special final show.

biscuit gallery will be relocating from its founding location in Shibuya to a new space in Shinjuku.

Over the past four years, the door on the first floor of biscuit gallery has been opened and closed countless times—by artists, visitors, staff, and everyone who has engaged with the gallery. This glass door at the entrance has served not only as a physical threshold, but also as a symbolic passage connecting artworks and viewers, artists and collectors, and new expressions with new possibilities.

Embracing the themes of encounters and farewells, as well as transitions into new worlds—all symbolized by this “door”—we have titled our final group exhibition at the Shibuya space doors.

This exhibition marks both an end and a new beginning: a closing chapter in Shibuya and the opening of another in Shinjuku. We warmly invite you to visit our final show in Shibuya, and we look forward to welcoming you again on the other side of the new door.

Mahiko Kobayashi

Director, biscuit gallery

Special Feature

In addition to showcasing new works by participating artists, this exhibition includes a special presentation of artworks owned by collectors who previously acquired them from biscuit gallery. By exhibiting these collected works once again in a new gallery setting, we hope to offer viewers a fresh and unique experience, distinct from the time of their original acquisition.

Please note that due to space limitations, the exhibited collector-owned works were selected by the gallery from among the submissions. These works are not available for sale.
