【WEEK01】Kato Solo Exhbition “Tales of Things with Form”

biscuit gallery (Shinjuku) will be holding a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Kato titled “Tales of Things with Form” This exhibition will be held from Wednesday, October 29 to Monday, November 3 (a national holiday), and will be open every day during the exhibition period.

This will be the Kato’s second solo exhibition at biscuit gallery, held for the first time in about two and a half years. He will also be exhibiting his sculptural works for the first time.

Lately, I’ve been painting more things with form.
In my works, the motifs emerge as forms through the use of lines.

For this exhibition, I also created three-dimensional works made of ceramics.

Since three-dimensional works have no lines, I create form by kneading clay with my hands.

Although the methods are different, I believe that paintings and sculptures are similar in regards to how form is shaped.

While I was developing my pieces I went back and forth between the mindset of creating three-dimensional works and the mindset of creating two-dimensional works, so the resulting pieces may feel like a mixture of both.

Through this process of creation, I aim to postulate more on the notion of form and to create more pieces with forms.

【Solo exhibition】Nagisa Tsuji「nekis」

biscuit gallery will be hosting “nekis,” a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Nagisa Tsuji, commencing on Saturday, October 18, 2025.

There will be an opening party on October 18th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, and the artist will be in attendance.

“nekis” is Tsuji Nagisa’s second solo exhibition and her first at biscuit gallery.
The exhibition will be centered around her previously released “nekis series.”

“Nekis” is a work of fiction that treats the Winged Victory of Samothrace as if it were a single “species,” such as amphibians or birds, this species is named “nike’ which are then collected as specimens.

I go out into the field to photograph them, akin to bird-watching. What is collected are then mounted as specimens and added to a collection.

The accompanying landscape photographs serve as captions explaining where the specimen was found, or as a backdrop for photographs that appear to document its behavior.

These specimens invite us not only to contemplate the fictional life-form “nike”, but also to observe what kinds of material layers make up a collage. Supported by the thin needle is a mere piece of paper that looks as if it could fly away, and the shadow it casts is also opaque and flimsy.

These works, from different times and places, are made to overlap within the single plane of a panel.

※Note: The Winged Victory of Samothrace is an ancient Greek sculpture representing the goddess of victory (Louvre Museum).

Please look forward to the exhibitions featuring the emerging artist Nagisa Tsuji.

Drawing exhibition「6 drawings vol.3」

biscuit gallery (Shinjuku, Tokyo) is pleased to present the third edition of our popular “6 drawings” series, 6 drawings vol.3.

6 drawings vol.3 is an exhibition focused on drawings by six artists.
On view: Saturday, November 8 – Sunday, November 23, 2025.

This exhibition is presented in partnership with AWASE gallery. It brings together drawings by six artists—Yennie Ebihara, Haruto Kamijo, Charles Munka, Saki Maruyama, Kana Mitsunari, and Yuzuki—each offering their own interpretation.

A curated project in which six artists expand the possibilities of drawing through their distinct approaches. We hope you enjoy the exhibition.

<Participating artists>

Yennie Ebihara
2003 Born in Japan, raised in Hong Kong
2021 – Current BFA in Oil Painting, Tokyo University of the Arts
2022 Recipient of the Keiichiro Kume Scholarship Fund

Ebihara was raised in Hong Kong since childhood and returned to Japan in 2015. She has experienced a variety of different cultures and languages as a person of Korean and Japanese descent who was raised in an English speaking environment. From this foundation, she observes the social environment and social issues she is involved in from her own perspective and expresses her thoughts on the society that surrounds her through the medium of her artwork.

Haruto Kamijo
2000 Born in Tokyo
Currently enrolled in the Doctoral Program, Department of Architecture, Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo.

Kamijo has been active in various fields, receiving the Dean’s Award of the Faculty of Engineering, The University of Tokyo (for outstanding research), being selected as a KUMA Foundation Scholar (8th and 9th terms), and producing costume materials for the Closing Ceremony of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.

Charles Munka
Born in Lyon, France.
2002 Graduated from École Émile Cohl
He is currently based on Sado Island, Niigata, where he continues to produce his works.

Having grown up in his teenage years watching Japanese animation and Asian cinema, his works convey the expressive and spontaneous brushstrokes rooted in the European and American traditions of Expressionism and Abstraction, while simultaneously engaging in an ongoing dialogue with the urban cultures of Asia.

Saki Maruyama
2002 Born in Tokyo
2021 Enrolled in the Department of Japanese Painting, College of Art and Design, Musashino Art University
2025 Graduated from the Department of Visual Communication Design at the same university

Focusing primarily on oil painting, her practice explores the structures and narratives that can exist within a painting—such as the relationship between the “viewer” and the “viewed,” paintings within paintings, and the links between the support and the motif.

Kana Mitsunari

Born in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
2023 Graduated from the Department of Oil Painting, College of Art and Design, Musashino Art University.
2023 Entered the Master’s Program in the Department of Painting, Laboratory of Oil Painting Techniques and Materials, Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts.

By combining different times and perspectives from reproduced images of phenomena actually witnessed, she reconstructs images that are then reinterpreted through the process of layering paint. In this repetition, emotions and experiences undergo transformation and materialize as paintings. Through this practice, she seeks to present the fundamental fact that one can perceive things only through one’s own experiences. She also explores the boundary between still life and the human figure, examining new possibilities for their expression.

Yuzuki
2023 Entered the Department of Oil Painting, Tokyo University of the Arts

Her works—paintings, picture books, and poetry—are inspired by the coming-of-age story of Kaneko Mineuchi, an honor student who always tries to fit in and avoid standing out within the hierarchical and conformist atmosphere of school life. When she falls in love with a quirky classmate, Yoshizawa-kun, who lives freely without concern for others’ opinions, she gradually learns to live true to herself and embrace her individuality.

Her creations focus on those who, within the machinery of society, have been ignored, unheard, unseen, or even treated as if they never existed.

Concept

Sugita consistently paints “light.”
City lights emerging from the darkness, vividly flashing neon signs—light serves as a symbol of life and a place of peace for humanity. Through her brushwork, she portrays the irrationalities and fragilities of modern society, aiming to reveal the issues underlying various phenomena and situations.
