At biscuit gallery, we are pleased to announce simultaneous exhibitions: Amane Ishii solo exhibition “warp” and Eri Fukami solo exhibition “fictional reality.”
Amane Ishii solo exhibition “warp” will be held across two floors—the 1st and 2nd floors of biscuit gallery—centering on portrait works.

Ishii speaks of wanting to “throw her paintings far away.” To express that she wants her paintings to remain for many years as throwing them far away—this is a sensibility characteristic of Ishii. One can sense an active nuance, as if projecting works into a different tense from the present. Now, like dice scattered, works are thrown into places different from here.
Works we typically see in museums and elsewhere are thus thrown across countless eras and have nonetheless remained in the present. Indeed, people’s eyes change, and paintings age. Yet paintings, in principle, live longer than people. Across time and space, people encounter distant objects from the past.
The title “warp” given to this solo exhibition, along with moving between dimensions of pictorial space, carries Ishii’s quiet longing and wishes toward paintings that have endured such distortions of space and time.

In the solo exhibition “fictional reality” by Eri Fukami, new paintings will be presented with “fiction” as the theme.
The exhibition venue is the 3rd floor of biscuit gallery.

Fukami explores and practices painting, and what kind of painting is possible for herself living in contemporary times, taking into account not only the lineage of art but also her own era, society, and culture. The artist states that many of her works, which depict figures with simple faces that evoke a sense of the “skillfully unskilled” style, describe personal worlds—events in her surroundings, relationships with family and others, love, and dreams she has seen.
Fukami’s approach of capturing doubts and realizations in daily life, the ambiguous and delicate inner movements we face as we live each day, and rendering them as paintings infused with fantasy, would evoke expressionist painters such as Kirchner and Munch. However, rather than standing on the side that narrates the lineage of art, the artist takes the stance of one who lives daily life, much like Hellenistic literature that celebrates love and the laws of nature, making it her motto to present the reality therein as painting. This is precisely why Fukami’s works respond to contemporary sensibility and possess the power to become an occasion for us to contemplate daily life anew.
Paints windows, mirrors, and paintings within paintings. Like girls moving freely within them, paintings themselves too have warped across eras, places, and techniques. In this age, I wonder what kind of paintings I can create as someone living through culture.
Eri Fukami | フカミエリ
Born in Osaka
Currently studying Oil Painting at Tokyo University of the Arts
Creates work exploring the theme of “the dwelling place of the heart” in myself and the world.
What is it that creates human consciousness? In certain moments, we feel déjà vu. In dreams, we see landscapes repeated over and over. We encounter “something” and are moved. Without our awareness, our hearts, our emotions, our memories teach us the “dwelling place of the world” more accurately than we ourselves.

石井는 자신의 그림을 “멀리 던지고 싶다”고 말합니다. 그림이 수년이나 남아있기를 원하는 것을, 멀리 던진다고 표현하는 것은 石井다운 감각이라고 생각합니다. 현재와는 다른 시제로 작품을 투사하는 듯한, 주체적인 뉘앙스가 느껴집니다. 지금, 여기와는 다른 장소로, 주사위 눈처럼 작품은 던져지는 것입니다.
미술관 등에서 평소 관람하는 작품은, 이렇게 수많은 시대로 던져졌음에도 불구하고 현재에 남아온 것들입니다. 확실히 사람의 눈은 변하고, 그림도 늙습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 회화는 원리적으로 인간보다 더 오랜 시간을 살고 있습니다. 시간과 장소를 넘어, 사람들은 먼 과거의 대상과 만나고 있습니다.
개인전에 붙은 타이틀 「warp」에는 회화 공간의 차원을 오가는 것과 함께, 이렇게 시공의 왜곡을 견뎌낸 회화에 대한 石井의 은근한 동경과 바람이 느껴집니다.

フカミエリ는 회화에 대해, 또한 현대를 살아가는 자신에게 가능한 회화에 대해, 미술의 계보뿐만 아니라 자신의 시대와 사회, 문화를 바탕으로 모색하고 실천하고 있습니다. 단순한 얼굴, 어딘가 서툰 맛의 흐름을 느끼게 하는 인물이 그려진 작품 대부분은 작가 주변의 일들, 가족이나 타자와의 관계, 사랑이나 자신이 본 꿈과 같은 개인적인 세계를 그린 것이라고 본인은 말합니다.
일상에서의 의심이나 깨달음, 우리가 매일 살아가면서 마주하는 모호하고 미묘한 내면의 운동을 포착하고, 동시에 환상성을 더한 회화화하는 フカミエリ의 태도는 Kirchner나 Munch와 같은 표현주의 화가들을 연상시킬 것입니다. 하지만 본인은 미술의 계보를 이야기하는 입장에 서기보다는, 오히려 사랑과 자연의 섭리를 노래한 헬레니즘 문학처럼 어디까지나 생활인의 입장에 서서 그곳에 있는 현실성을 회화로 제시하는 것을 모토로 합니다. 그렇기 때문에 フカミエリ의 작품은 동시대의 감성에 호응하고, 일상을 다시금 관조하게 하는 계기가 되는 힘을 가지지 않을까요.
창문, 거울, 그림 속 그림을 그린다. 그 안에서 자유롭게 움직이는 소녀들처럼, 회화 자신도 또한 시대와 장소, 기술을 왜곡해온 것이다. 지금의 시대, 문화로 살아가는 나에게는 어떤 그림을 그릴 수 있을까, 하며 매일 생각한다.

인간의 의식을 만드는 것은 무엇일까. 어떤 순간에 데자뷔를 느끼거나. 꿈속에서 몇 번이나 반복되는 풍경을 보거나. 「무언가」를 만나 감동하거나. 우리가 의식하지 않아도. 마음이, 감정이, 기억이, 나보다 더 정확하게 「세계의 소재」를 알려준다.
