The painter Sawako Nasu will take part in “Iemura Seminar Exhibition 2026: In a Space, with Natural Light Only, Placing Sawako Nasu’s Paintings” at the Art-Theque Gallery on the Hachioji campus of Tama Art University. The exhibition runs from Saturday, October 3 to Monday, October 26, 2026. Nasu’s oil paintings will be shown under natural light in a large space of about 560 square metres, part of which reaches nine metres in ceiling height.
The Iemura Seminar Exhibition is an annual exhibition organised by the Exhibition Design Seminar of the Department of Art Studies at Tama Art University, led by Professor Tamayo Iemura. This year’s edition marks its tenth iteration. The venue, the Art-Theque Gallery, has many glass surfaces, and outside light shifts throughout the space depending on weather and time of day, giving it a rare character for an exhibition space.
The “Natural Light Only” Series
Since the exhibition “Ryuji Nakamura: Displaying the Exhibition Room” four years ago, the seminar has continued to present exhibitions that use no artificial light. Paintings by Rieko Hidaka, sculptures by Rieko Otake, and films by Ryuji Nakamura have been placed in this space in turn. How the works appear shifts with the time of day, the weather, and the presence of visitors. The exhibition invites each visitor to notice, with their own eyes and body, what can only be sensed while they are there.
Exhibition Highlights
The starting point of the exhibition’s design is that, at Nasu’s request, plywood boards will be installed in the Art-Theque Gallery. Previous editions of the “natural light only” series deliberately made no changes to the gallery itself, taking the existing space as a given. Placing works and materials in that environment, and observing how the space and the works shifted with the passage of time, the weather and the situation, allowed us to notice things that had not been visible before. That was the guiding principle of the series. This time, that premise is joined by an intentional gesture of construction on the part of the artist. Nasu also differs from the artists who have taken part in previous editions: she is a young painter who turns thirty this year, and she does not yet have a long record of museum exhibitions. Yet, drawing on a childhood spent in a family of theatre practitioners and her own experience in stage design and direction, she is confronting the Art-Theque Gallery’s roughly 560 square metres, with parts of the ceiling reaching as high as nine metres, without hesitation. Rather than treating this vast space as a mere backdrop, she is exploring, with her own sensibility, how paintings can rise up within it.
Colour, too, becomes a central element this time. The works and materials featured in previous editions did not carry colour in the ordinary sense. Nasu’s paintings, by contrast, depict landscapes and figures through thin, layered strata of oil paint. How will these delicate colour layers change under shifting natural light? Will that change stay within the paintings, or will it spread throughout the space? The way colour emerges under natural light is one of the exhibition’s most significant elements.

Sawako Nasu is a painter who turns thirty this year. Having grown up in a family of theatre practitioners and worked in stage design and direction herself, she uses the language of painting to describe distance, connection, and relation. Rather than treating the large gallery space as a mere backdrop, she is approaching it with her own sensibility, exploring how paintings can rise up within it.

화가 Sawako Nasu가, 다마미술대학 하치오지 캠퍼스의 아트테크 갤러리에서 열리는 ‘이에무라 세미나 전 2026 공간에, 자연광만으로, Sawako Nasu의 회화를 두다’에 참가합니다. 회기는 2026년 10월 3일(토)부터 10월 26일(월)까지입니다. 약 560㎡, 일부는 천장고 9미터에 이르는 큰 공간에서, 그의 유화가 자연광 아래 놓입니다.
‘이에무라 세미나 전’은 다마미술대학 예술학과의 전람회 설계 세미나(담당 교수: 이에무라 다마요)가 매년 개최하는 전람회로, 올해로 10회째를 맞이합니다. 이번 회장인 아트테크 갤러리는 유리면이 많아 날씨와 시간대에 따라 외광이 공간 전체에 크게 영향을 미치는, 전시 공간으로서는 매우 특이한 성격을 지닌 장소입니다.
‘자연광만으로’ 시리즈
이에무라 세미나 전은 4년 전 ‘나카무라 류지: 전시실을 전시’ 이후, 인공광을 사용하지 않고 자연광만으로 작품을 보여주는 전람회를 이어오고 있습니다. 지금까지 히다카 리에코의 회화, 오타케 리에코의 조각, 나카무라 류지의 필름을 이 공간에 놓아 왔습니다. 시간과 날씨, 그 자리에 있는 사람의 움직임에 따라, 작품이 보이는 방식 자체가 흔들리며 변해 갑니다. 그 자리에 있을 때에만 알아차릴 수 있는 것을, 관람객이 자신의 눈과 몸으로 직접 발견하는 전람회입니다.
전시의 볼거리
이번 전시 구성의 출발점은, Sawako Nasu의 요청으로 아트테크 갤러리에 합판 벽을 설치하게 된 데 있습니다. 지금까지의 ‘자연광만으로’ 시리즈에서는 갤러리 자체에는 굳이 손을 대지 않고, 기존 공간을 그대로 받아들이는 것을 전제로 삼아 왔습니다. 그 환경 속에 작품과 물질을 놓고, 공간과 작품이 시간, 날씨, 상황에 따라 어떻게 변해 가는지를 관찰함으로써, 지금까지 보이지 않던 것을 알아차리는 일을 소중히 여겨 왔기 때문입니다. 그것이 이 시리즈에서 지켜 온 태도였습니다. 이번에는 그 전제에 더해, 작가 자신의 의사에 의한 ‘설계’가 시리즈에 더해집니다. 또한 Sawako Nasu는 지금까지의 시리즈에서 함께 해 온 작가들과 달리, 올해 서른 살을 맞이하는 젊은 화가입니다. 미술관에서의 전시 경험은 아직 많지 않습니다. 그러나 유년기를 연극인 가족 속에서 보내고, 무대 미술과 연출에 관여한 경험을 바탕으로, 약 560㎡, 일부는 천장고 9미터에 이르는 아트테크 갤러리의 공간에 주저 없이 마주하고 있습니다. 큰 공간을 단순한 배경으로 취급하는 것이 아니라, 그 안에 회화가 어떻게 서 있게 되는지를 자신만의 감각으로 과감하게 탐구합니다.
또한 이번에는 ‘색채’가 중요한 요소가 됩니다. 지금까지 다루어져 온 작품과 물질에는 이른바 색채가 함께 있지 않았습니다. 그에 비해 Sawako Nasu의 회화는 얇게 겹쳐진 유채의 색층을 통해 풍경과 인물을 그리는 것이 특징입니다. 자연광의 흐름 속에서 그 섬세한 색층들은 어떻게 변해 갈지. 그 변화는 회화 내부에 머무를지, 아니면 공간 전체로 퍼져 나갈지. 자연광 아래에서 나타나는 색채의 모습 또한, 이번 전람회의 큰 볼거리입니다.

Sawako Nasu는 올해 서른 살이 되는 화가입니다. 유년기를 연극인 가족 속에서 보내고, 자신도 무대 미술과 연출에 관여한 경험을 바탕으로, 회화라는 언어로 ‘거리, 이어짐, 관계’를 그려 왔습니다. 이번에는 큰 공간을 단순한 배경으로 취급하는 것이 아니라, 그 안에 회화가 어떻게 서 있게 되는지를 자신만의 감각으로 과감하게 탐구합니다.
