International Dialogueでは、4人の日本人アーティストと4人の外国人アーティストがそれぞれ対になっている。どの組み合わせも、表現形式、メディア、スタイル、モチーフ、動機など共通点がある。目的は、それぞれの作品の間に対話を生み出すこと。多様性が出会うとき、私たちは何を学ぶことができるのか。異なる文化的背景を持つアーティストたちは、同じような問いにどのようにアプローチするのか？biscuit gallery渋谷の3フロアと軽井沢のスペースは、対となる作品が対話するための4つの異なる場を提供する。
biscuit gallery, a contemporary art commercial gallery located on Shibuya Ward’s Shoto Culture Street (Shibuya Ward, Shoto), will hold the group exhibition “International Dialogue” starting May 18, 2024.
With the cooperation of curator Jens Petersen, we will introduce the “dialogue” between Japanese and overseas artists through the exhibition.
The exhibition period runs from May 18, 2024 (Saturday) to June 9, 2024 (Sunday).
This exhibition will also be held simultaneously at biscuit gallery karuizawa (Karuizawa).
An opening reception will be held on May 18 (Saturday) from 16:00-19:00.

We are living in an era when humanity is rejecting science and humanism. Those in power are unable to take appropriate measures against man-made climate change and do not understand that oppression and violence only generate further violence. Polarization between groups with different values is expanding, and arguments based on intellect are being ignored.
In such circumstances, it is essential to cultivate spaces where people with different backgrounds can interact and get to know one another. The art world should welcome all voices, explore new ideas, and challenge the status quo.
In International Dialogue, four Japanese artists are paired with four foreign artists. Each pairing shares commonalities in form of expression, media, style, motif, and motivation. The goal is to create dialogue between their respective works. What can we learn when diversity meets? How do artists from different cultural backgrounds approach the same questions? The three floors of biscuit gallery Shibuya and the space in Karuizawa provide four different venues for paired works to engage in dialogue.
On the first floor in Shibuya, there is a conversation between Korean and Japanese threads; on the second floor, expressive figurative paintings from Tokyo welcome their counterparts from Mexico; on the top floor, abstract paintings from Sweden and Kyushu engage in philosophical discussion. At the Karuizawa gallery, landscape paintings from Yamagata and Taiwan share memories.
Observe how brushstrokes and colors resonate with one another. Listen to the faint whispers of ambiguously depicted figures. Feel the warmth of interconnected textiles. And imagine a world where all humans seek to understand one another on equal ground.

Jens Petersen
Jens Petersen is a Swedish art enthusiast and collector who has lived in Tokyo for the past 15 years. During the pandemic, his growing interest in art led him to begin studying curation, including taking courses at Node Center in Berlin.
International Dialogue is his first exhibition.
“Through curation, I want to increase opportunities for overseas artists to exhibit their work in Japan and help Japanese artists display their work overseas. For International Dialogue, I decided to pair four foreign artists who have never exhibited in Japan with four domestic artists who are rarely seen in the overseas art scene.”
“The pairs are categorized into textiles, figurative, abstract, and landscape painting, each displayed in one different space. While it may appear as four separate exhibitions, I want visitors to see the connections between them. First, through the exhibition’s title, dialogue progresses between the works. Second, it is art that questions what the human eye perceives. I am drawn to such works. Layered paintings that change their nature according to light, works that take viewers beyond the canvas—literally into physical space or into the realm of the mind—or works whose meaning is not immediately apparent. I believe all eight artists possess this quality.”

우리는 인류가 과학과 인본주의를 거부하는 시대에 살고 있습니다. 권력자들은 인위적인 기후 변화에 대한 적절한 대책을 강구할 수 없으며, 억압과 폭력이 더 많은 폭력을 낳을 뿐이라는 것을 이해하지 못하고 있습니다. 서로 다른 가치관을 가진 그룹 간의 양극화가 확대되고 있으며, 지성에 기반한 논의는 무시되고 있습니다.
이러한 상황 속에서 서로 다른 배경을 가진 사람들이 교류하고 서로를 알 수 있는 장소를 조성하는 것이 필수적입니다. 미술계는 모든 목소리를 환영하고 새로운 아이디어를 탐구하며 현상에 도전해야 합니다.
International Dialogue에서는 4명의 일본인 아티스트와 4명의 외국인 아티스트가 각각 짝을 이루고 있습니다. 모든 조합은 표현 형식, 매체, 스타일, 모티프, 동기 등에서 공통점을 가지고 있습니다. 목표는 각각의 작품 사이에 대화를 창출하는 것입니다. 다양성이 만날 때 우리는 무엇을 배울 수 있을까요? 서로 다른 문화적 배경을 가진 아티스트들은 같은 질문에 어떻게 접근할까요? biscuit gallery 시부야의 3개 층과 가루이자와의 공간은 짝을 이루는 작품들이 대화하기 위한 4개의 서로 다른 장소를 제공합니다.
시부야 1층에서는 한국과 일본의 실(실타래)의 대화가 있고, 2층에서는 도쿄의 표정 풍부한 구상 회화가 멕시코의 동지를 맞이하며, 최상층에서는 스웨덴과 큐슈의 추상 회화가 철학적인 논의를 나눕니다. 가루이자와의 갤러리에서는 야마가타와 대만의 풍경화가 추억을 나누고 있습니다.

페테르센 옌스는 15년 전부터 도쿄에 살고 있는 스웨덴인 미술 애호가이자 컬렉터입니다. 팬데믹 중에 미술에 대한 관심 증가로 인해 베를린의 Node Center에서의 과정을 포함하여 큐레이션을 공부하기 시작했습니다.
International Dialogue는 그의 첫 번째 전시회입니다.
「큐레이션을 통해 해외 아티스트가 일본에서 작품을 발표할 기회를 늘리고, 일본 작가가 해외에서 작품을 전시하도록 도움을 주고 싶습니다. International Dialogue에서는 일본에서 전시한 적이 없는 4명의 외국인 아티스트와 해외 미술 신에서 거의 볼 수 없는 4명의 국내 아티스트를 짝을 이루어 전시하기로 했습니다.」
「짝은 텍스타일, 구상, 추상, 풍경화로 분류되어 각각 하나의 다른 공간에서 전시됩니다. 4개의 전시회로 나뉘어 보일 수도 있지만, 방문객들이 그 연결성을 보길 원합니다. 첫째, 전시회 제목을 통해 작품 간의 대화가 진행되고 있음을 보이는 것입니다. 둘째, 인간의 눈에 보이는 것이 무엇인지 의문을 제기하는 미술입니다. 저는 그러한 작품들에 끌립니다. 빛에 의해 특성이 변하는 층이 있는 회화이거나, 캔버스 밖(말 그대로 물리적인 공간, 또는 정신적인, 마음속의)으로 여행하게 하는 작품이거나, 그것이 무엇인지, 무엇을 전달하고 싶은지 바로 알 수 없는 작품들입니다. 8명의 작가 모두가 이러한 특성을 가지고 있다고 생각합니다.」
