biscuit gallery in Matsumatsu, Shibuya Ward is pleased to announce a solo exhibition “Sunny, Rainy,” by Sawako Nasu, opening June 29, 2023 (Thursday).

In this exhibition “Sunny, Rainy,” Sawako Nasu presents a collection of paintings created in the highland region.
The ever-changing landscape of the highland region swept Nasu’s thoughts into a continuous flow, leading her to create this series of works.
All paintings displayed in the exhibition are titled either “Sunny” or “Rainy.” This symbolizes the connection between weather and human behavior. Throughout history, humans have organized their daily lives by classifying, naming, recording, and predicting weather. Nasu states, “The act of naming weather is a subtle resistance for us to survive our days, a standard that has been established.”
Within the changes spreading across this vast land, a vertical axis attempting to remain standing as a single entity is depicted throughout the paintings, continuing perpetually while repeating birth and weathering.
Taking as its theme the human struggle to come to terms with uncontrollable nature, new paintings are displayed alongside meticulously constructed spaces.

Sawako Nasu
Born in Tokyo in 1996
Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, Department of Fine Arts, Oil Painting Major in 2021
Completed Master’s Program, Graduate School of Fine Arts, Oil Painting Studio I, Tokyo University of the Arts in 2023
Sawako Nasu speaks of distance, connection, and relationships through the language of painting. When reflecting on her practice, Nasu asks, “How can I touch paintings from the past?” At the foundation of her work lies a gaze toward the unbridgeable absolute distance that lies between the classical or modernist paintings she admires, their era, and herself as a contemporary person. This sensibility gives her art a thorough vision. Nasu’s approach to the possibilities of painting, contrasting the era of classical painting with the contemporary age to which she belongs, transcends the scope of her personal interests and can be said to embody a contemporary consciousness that explores what is possible at the cutting edge of art history, which is constantly being renewed.

나수 사와코의 본 전시 「Sunny,Rainy,」에서는, 그녀가 고원 지대에서 창출한 회화군으로 구성됩니다.
고원 지대의 끊임없이 변화하는 풍경은, 나수의 사고를 일정한 흐름으로 밀어붙이고, 이 일련의 작품 제작으로 이끌었습니다.
전시되는 모든 회화에는, 「Sunny」또는 「Rainy」라는 제목이 붙어있습니다. 이는 날씨와 인간의 행동의 결합을 상징하고 있습니다. 인간은 역사를 통해 날씨를 분류하고, 명명하고, 기록하고, 예측함으로써 일상의 영위를 정리해왔습니다. 나수는, 「날씨를 명명하는 행위는, 우리가 매일을 살아내기 위한 미세한 저항, 세워진 하나의 표지」라고 述べています.
그 광대한 땅에 펼쳐지는 변화 속에서, 하나의 주체로서 우뚝 서려고 하는 수직축이, 회화군 중에 그려지고, 탄생과 풍화를 반복하면서 연면히 계속되고 있습니다.
제어 불가능한 자연과 타협하려고 하는 인간의 갈등을 주제로, 정교하게 구축된 공간과 함께 신작의 회화가 전시됩니다.
