Concept
Innocence, narrative quality, and unconsciousness
I work while considering the balance of these three elements when creating works.
Wood carving has a strong sense of tangible reality, so with each piece I create, it feels as though a creature was born as a fully mature adult without a larval stage.
Since I want to express this state as-is, I carve and paint while avoiding adding expressions as much as possible.
The form of the work itself (including the clothing it wears) carries narrative quality. I want to wrap it in a narrative with strong fictional qualities rather than realistic ones.
If I wrap a form with strong tangible reality in a realistic narrative, it seems it would become a miniaturized diorama, which feels constraining.
Rather than seeking empathy from the viewer, I want to guide them into a world of free imagination through alien fictional qualities.
However, I make it a point to express the main subject of the work as being unconscious of the narrative it carries.
