Statement
The motifs in Yuta Fukuhara’s paintings encompass a wide range including figures, still life, and landscapes, spanning from abstract to figurative work. Fukuhara discovers subjects for his works in the mundane everyday life of being alone or spending time with friends, creating paintings based on images he photographs himself with his smartphone, while freely arranging them through his own sensory filter. Fukuhara constantly considers how to narrow the distance between himself as the creator and the viewers of his work, wanting them to retroactively experience the perspective he held while creating each painting. This represents a desire for non-verbal communication—sharing through his works the incomplete, hard-to-articulate sensations and perceptions he holds in his daily life with strangers—and for Fukuhara, painting and drawing serve as effective mediums for this purpose. Nevertheless, Fukuhara does not impose a “correct” way of viewing his paintings on viewers, but rather hopes they will receive them freely through their own sensibility. In an era where contemporary art works increasingly demand excessive context and prior knowledge, competing solely on “difficulty,” Fukuhara Yuta’s painting practice possesses a notably fresh quality.
