Concept

Yurina Okada’s works traverse the realms of painting and photography, questioning the possibilities of flat artwork that should exist for the next generation.
Her works undergo a process in which photographs of grasses, flowers, and women of her generation are flattened through transfer techniques, and paint is poured into the cracks that appear. While incorporating both photographic and painting processes, her works lean toward neither, suggesting rather a new realm accompanied by a somewhat craft-like character in which the strength and precision of objects are meticulously pursued through handwork.
While her distinctive matière recalls the ingenuity in surface effects found in Russian Avant-Garde artists, as Okada speaks of her work as “there is a thought that everything decays,” it can be said that there is a spirit akin to the “beauty of imperfection” that Tenshin Okakura pointed out in tea ceremony culture—a tea ceremony aesthetic that is fundamentally Japanese.
