【Theme: “Art, art, ART”】
Geopolitically and generationally, we feel as though we are in the midst of change.
While social division has deepened in some regions due to suppressed living conditions,
soaring asset prices have also triggered a sort of manic state.
As values become increasingly diverse in this way, both existing art featured in the market and newly emerging expressions take on many forms.

The beauty of art is that through expression, we can experience the value of a changing and diversifying world. Among this diverse art, the theme of “Art Fair Tokyo 2022,” which provides visitors with authentic works, is “Art, art, ART.”

Yurina Okada’s works traverse the realms of painting and photography while raising questions about the possibilities of two-dimensional works that should exist for the next generation. Her works undergo a process in which photographs of wildflowers and women of her generation are flattened through transfer techniques, and paint is poured into the cracks that appear—incorporating processes from both photography and painting while leaning toward neither, they instead suggest a new realm accompanied by a somewhat craft-like character, meticulously pursuing object strength and precision through manual labor. Her unique texture recalls the ingenuity of surface effects seen in Russian avant-garde artists, while, as Okada speaks of her work saying “there is a thought that all things decay,” it can be said that there exists a spirit akin to the aesthetics of tea culture and Japanese aesthetics—the “beauty of imperfection” that Tenshin Okakura pointed out in tea culture.
