Yotaro Fuda presents a painting experience through his work that seems to awaken our poetic and intuitive senses.
Selecting familiar subjects such as cats and crows as motifs, Fuda slightly distorts their forms during the creation process, gently abstracting them as if dissolving their outlines to construct the picture plane.
By coexisting the figurative and abstract, and by building up medium so thickly that the paint surface becomes raised, his works invite viewers into a free painting space, as the artist himself says, “the painting itself feels alive.”
Such a design of painting space that prompts fluid interpretation can be said to align with the painting sensibility often seen in Moriichi Kumagai and Japanese painting—an abundance of empty space, perspective without depth, and figuration deformed to an almost caricatural degree.
