Overviews
Yosuke Yamanouchi creates works that confront the history and structure of painting itself with sincerity, seeking to draw out its possibilities without reserve.
While quoting classical paintings, his approach—making subtle yet bold modifications—recalls the stance of avant-garde artists, Dadaists, and Surrealists, yet his work goes further, addressing the materiality of painting itself.
Just as artists of the Russian Avant-Garde once developed the concept of Faktura, paying attention to surface treatment and effects in painting, Yamanouchi, as seen in his “Epidermis Series,” does not confine painting to a simple discourse on imagery. Instead, he imparts visual effects that might be called “the tactility of vision” to his works, continuously presenting us viewers with new painting experiences and the possibilities of contemporary painting.
