Concept
Sungju Ham’s realism transcends realism in the literal sense of the word (accurately depicting things as they are) and exists in a world beyond the screen. In other words, his work is characterized by depicting, in various ways, the transformed forms and newly perceived meanings that images reproduced on digital media screens—from popular culture and games that flourished in the 1990s to recent video content—undergo through the artist’s hand. The flat images on LCD screens are imbued with tactile and three-dimensional life through his hands, and in this process, the same scene reaches viewers with different meanings, or invites them to imagine what happens next.
Just as realism has been practiced in various forms—such as reproducing the sense of seeing objects or exposing the absurdities inherent in contemporary society—the new methodology that Sungju Ham presents is realism equipped with modernity, and he is one of the new generation of artists leading Korean figurative painting.
