【Artist Profile】
Sawako Nasu
Born in Tokyo in 1996.
Graduated from the Department of Oil Painting, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts in 2021. Currently enrolled in the Master’s Program at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, Oil Painting Laboratory 1. Recognized recipient of the O Memorial Scholarship.
Notable exhibitions include a 2-person exhibition “b⇔d” with Renichiro Tada (biscuit gallery, 2021, Tokyo).
Sawako Nasu speaks of distance, connection, and relationships through the language of painting.
When reflecting on her own artistic practice, Nasu asks, “How can I touch paintings of the past?” At the foundation of her work lies a gaze directed toward the absolute unbridgeable distance that lies between the classical or modernist paintings she admires, their era, and herself existing in the contemporary age. This sensibility gives thorough vision to Nasu’s art.
Nasu’s approach of engaging with the possibilities of painting while contrasting the era of classical painting with the contemporary age to which she belongs transcends the scope of her personal interests and can be said to embody a contemporary consciousness exploring what is possible at the cutting edge of the continuously evolving history of art.

2021년 도쿄 예술대학 미술학부 회화과 유화 전공 졸업, 현재 도쿄 예술대학 대학원 미술연구과 석사과정 유화 제1연구실 재학중. 동학 O씨 기념상 장학금으로 인정됨.
