Standing at the Boundary Line, Receiving Reflected Light

 

This time, biscuit gallery (Shinjuku Ward) will hold a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Machi Sugita titled “Standing at the Boundary Line, Receiving Reflected Light.”
The exhibition period is from November 29, 2025 (Saturday) to December 14 (Sunday).
※The exhibition has been extended to December 21 (Sunday).

On the opening day, November 29 (Saturday), a talk event will be held from 15:00-16:00, and from 16:00-19:00, the artist will be present for an opening party.

This is the artist’s first solo exhibition at biscuit gallery. The exhibition will feature painting works as the centerpiece, along with ceramic sculptures and drawings.

 

“Standing at the Boundary Line, Receiving Reflected Light”

Heat shimmer wavers in memory.

Constantly strong, the afterimage left behind the eyelids never ceases to flicker. That light, wrapped in some warmth—is it the glimmer of horsehair? Is it the reflection of white?

Is it something latent, or perhaps reflected light from you, emerging in dialogue with people?

Carefully recalling these fragments of reflected light——I gazed out the window.

 

As light grows stronger, shadows deepen. This begins with capturing with these eyes the reverse side of each landscape and matter, the land where history and blood have accumulated, the truth.

Because everyone carries “paleness,” I accept and view the “boundary line” affirmatively.

 

“When facing someone in front of me in daily life, I think about the boundary line that is naturally drawn between you and me. The act of placing a sign itself creates boundaries and brings about their promotion. The inevitable reality that boundary lines are eternal, the situations maintained by boundary lines, and individual peace of mind. These and landscapes diffusely reflect off one another, forming the present world.

It is impossible to cross boundary lines, but perhaps what is asked of us is to stand before the boundary line and repeatedly engage in dialogue with the other to deepen understanding.”

 

And with the flow of time, one body is carried forward to daily life, to before the canvas. Humidity, land, and casual conversation—and finding peace of mind in gazing down at one’s feet. Indeed, I surely exist here.

And the painting inherits my memory and preserves it together with light.

Machi Sugita
Born in 2000 in Saitama Prefecture.
2020 Graduated from the Sculpture Department, Fine Arts Course, Joshibi University of Art and Design Junior College
2022 Completed Graduate Studies at the same university (Bachelor’s degree)

Consistently paints “light”—the light of streets emerging from darkness, vividly flickering signs. Light is a symbol of the existence of life and a place of human peace. Through her brushwork, she depicts contemporary society overflowing with irrationality, and aims to present issues in various phenomena and situations.
