Concept
イ・ジョンファン (Lee Jonghwan, b.1994) is a contemporary artist based in Seoul.
His creative concept is characterized by the approach of viewing painting not as mere “reproduction of images,” but as a “world being generated” where matter, time, and perception intersect.
For イ・ジョンファン, painting is defined not as a method of unfolding pre-existing images from his mind onto a support, but as the “world in formation” itself, drawing out the inherent possibilities within the materials and being shaped in the present moment.
In his works, the wooden panel used for painting is not merely a support, but is treated as an “organic hexahedron” and “microcosm” where entities derived from the painting reside. Additionally, grooves carved into the wood and traces of landscape, through processes such as casting, create a unique texture that fluctuates between the boundaries of two and three dimensions.
イ・ジョンファン is an artist who continues to explore the materiality of painting and how space, time, and human perception encounter painting.
