Tribeca, New York. GR gallery is on the second floor of a building on Chambers Street. On September 12, 2026, Kosuke Ajiro’s first solo exhibition in the United States, “Excavation Record I – Sayonara”, opened.
New York is a special place for Ajiro. Sixteen years ago, at the age of 30, he visited the city and made the rounds of its galleries (he was especially moved by an exhibition by Alessandro Pessoli). Although he had never even painted, he resolved that one day he would hold a solo exhibition in New York, and that was where his life as an artist began.
So when Alberto, the director of GR Gallery, offered him this exhibition, Ajiro said yes on the spot despite his busy schedule. The full story can be read at the link below.
The 19 works, which he kept painting right past the shipping deadline, included many large-scale pieces unlike anything seen in his previous solo exhibitions, and visitors had question after question.
Ajiro had been studying English for this day. Faced with a barrage of questions from visitors, he seemed a little taken aback at first, but as the evening went on he was explaining his work carefully in his own words, translation device in hand. The opening ran past the 8:00 pm closing time, and between signing copies of the newly completed art book and handing them to buyers, the time flew by.

뉴욕 트라이베카. GR gallery는 챔버스 스트리트의 한 건물 2층에 자리하고 있습니다. 2026년 9월 12일, 아지로 코스케의 미국 첫 개인전 ‘Excavation Record I – Sayonara’가 개막했습니다.
아지로에게 뉴욕은 특별한 곳입니다. 16년 전 서른 살에 찾은 뉴욕에서 갤러리를 돌아보았고(특히 Alessandro Pessoli의 전시에 깊은 감명을 받았습니다), 그림을 그려 본 경험조차 없었음에도 ‘언젠가 뉴욕에서 개인전을 열겠다’고 결심하며 작가로서의 삶이 시작되었습니다.
그런 만큼 GR Gallery의 대표 알베르토 씨로부터 이번 전시 제안을 받았을 때, 바쁜 일정에도 불구하고 그 자리에서 수락해 전시가 결정되었습니다. 자세한 이야기는 아래에서 보실 수 있습니다.
배송 마감을 넘기면서까지 그려진 19점의 작품 가운데에는 지금까지의 개인전에서 볼 수 없었던 대형 작품이 많이 걸렸고, 관람객들로부터 질문이 쏟아졌습니다.
이날을 위해 영어를 공부해 온 아지로였지만, 관람객들의 질문 공세에 처음에는 당황하는 모습도 보였습니다. 그러나 후반에는 번역기를 손에 들고 자신의 말로 또박또박 설명했습니다. 개막일은 종료 시간인 20시를 넘겨서까지 이어졌고, 막 완성된 작품집에 사인을 해 구매자에게 건네는 등 순식간에 지나간 시간이었습니다.
