Shiro Hotaru Solo Exhibition "Conceived at the Dining Table"

ミノリ初個展 「リトル・ヴォイス」

On this occasion, biscuit gallery karuizawa will hold a solo exhibition 「食卓にて孕む」 by Hotaru Tachi beginning Saturday, July 8, 2023. Hotaru Tachi has previously presented works combining painting and wood carving. The word “食卓” (dining table) contained in the exhibition title encompasses three elements: furniture, people, and meals, and for this exhibition, furniture serves as the support structure. Additionally, the word “孕む” (to conceive) is primarily used to mean pregnancy, but it also carries the meaning of “the swelling of plant buds as they emerge.” Please enjoy the world of 「食卓にて孕む」 that Hotaru Tachi expresses through the works in this exhibition.

The following are Hotaru Tachi’s thoughts on this exhibition:

“The reason I create works dealing with wood stems entirely from wood carving that began with the concept of frames, and to not stray too far from the framework of painting. Additionally, wood continues to change and deteriorate even after becoming material, and I maintain a strong awareness of it as an organic substance. Yes, for my work to expand outward, this element of the organic becomes crucial.

And this time, the worn-out furniture that will serve as support structures. These are things that have lived alongside people for many years, and as such, they contain the memories of their owners’ lives. In other words, I came to think of used furniture as the perfect substrate for my work to inhabit—an organic material with even greater allure.

There is an artist named Aoyano Fumiaki who creates works dealing with waste materials including furniture. Through the act of “repairing” things, he draws out the spiritual presence dwelling within them as his practice.

In contrast, I decided to respect that a thing was what it was, and to attempt the act of “parasitizing” my work onto the thing, causing a creative spirit to inhabit the spiritual presence dwelling within the thing.

There exists a fungus called cordyceps, which has long been valued as a medicinal herb in traditional Eastern medicine. As fungi, they parasitize insects, eventually kill them, and mature by using their bodies as nourishment.

Thus, as the support structure of the thing progresses with my creative work, it gradually undergoes deformation, and the endpoint it reaches may not be completion, but perhaps the moment when life comes to an end. It is possible that the works of mine that exist here now have only recently begun parasitizing and are still in the midst of undergoing the metamorphosis of conception.”

This exhibition marks the grand opening of 「biscuit gallery karuizawa,」 the second location for biscuit gallery.

In Karuizawa, please savor the charm of artist Hotaru Tachi.

The artist is scheduled to be in attendance on July 8 (Saturday), the opening day.

“Bearing negativity and maintaining a sense of discomfort—in my thinking, these cause strain upon objects and produce distortions. Precisely because of this, the resulting paintings undergo significant deformation and metamorphose into semi-three-dimensional anomalies. However, by bestowing upon them the appearance of gentleness, quietude, and tranquility, I bring solace to negative landscapes. In doing so, perhaps we can come to affirm the existence of the negative, which tends to be denied.”
