Concept

Moving between flat brushwork and the process of woodblock printing, I reconsider painting from “crafts” and “mingei” (folk arts) that have been nurtured within secular culture. By tracing drawings within crafts that have developed through vessel painting, folk implements, and folk art, I create paintings using symbolic imagery where the forms of original motifs have been bleached.

Improvised compositions that combine tool-dependent fragmentary motif collection with diverse drawing methods create new imagery by joining existing elements present on the outside together on the inside.
