Yasuaki Kuroda, a represented artist of biscuit gallery, will take part in “Coordinates — Now/Here: Artists Supported by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government”, a related exhibition of the TOKYO ATLAS International Art Exhibition. The show opens at WHAT MUSEUM in Tennoz from Saturday 10 October through Sunday 20 December 2026.
Coordinates is held at WHAT MUSEUM concurrently with TOKYO ATLAS, which is presented by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the Executive Committee for the Tokyo International Festival of Arts and Culture, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture. The exhibition focuses on the current practices of artists and curators that the city has long supported, and sets out, as its title suggests, to let their individual trajectories intersect on the international stage of TOKYO ATLAS and plot a new set of coordinates together.
The second floor of the museum is overseen by Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS) and features artists who have previously taken part in programs run by TOKAS and Arts Council Tokyo. Kuroda is participating on this second floor.
The walls are lined with a large, densely woven textile and more than 100 spools. Wound onto them are silk threads that Kuroda has dyed with natural plant dyes.
The colors that emerge can only appear at particular places and moments, shaped by many converging factors: the environment in which the plants grew and the land’s history, the water used in dyeing, the chemicals and metals used to fix the dyes, the condition of the silkworms that produce the silk, and even Kuroda’s surroundings. Rather than sorting these elements into natural processes and human intervention, Kuroda approaches his practice by seeing them as part of one continuum that includes humans.
From several hundred batches of dyed silk thread, Kuroda selects several thousand warp threads, then passes the weft back and forth tens of thousands of times according to a set of rules to produce a single textile. The process involves countless successive choices. The arrangement of the threads, the openings left in the weave, the state of the weaver, and events occurring in and around the site all influence the next choice. While the artist mediates between material and environment, the threads and surroundings in turn guide his decisions, with the balance of control continually shifting between them.
Just as the word “text” derives from the Latin texere, meaning “to weave,” weaving and language are deeply connected. For Kuroda, a textile takes shape before experience is put into words: it is formed as the artist, thread, time, environment, and other elements act upon one another and are woven together. His practice can be understood as an attempt to trace our relationship with a natural world of which we are a part.

About the Artist
Yasuaki Kuroda
黒田恭章
Born in Niigata, Japan in 1986. Completed the Crafts and Industrial Design course at the Graduate School of Musashino Art University. Working with threads dyed in plant-based pigments and self-made wooden frames, Kuroda builds pieces in which the structure of woven cloth itself becomes the work. His practice returns to texere, the Latin root of the word text, and approaches textile as a recording medium that predates written language.
