Statement
The infinite space of “ma” (interval) as something finite.
In Japanese painting, the composition of the picture plane emphasizes the relationship between figure and empty space—the “ma”—but in my work, I perceive the empty space as light, making the ground of the picture plane, or “finite ma,” the main focus. By giving white ground as light to the infinite interval that was previously untouched, I aim to incorporate subtle qualities such as time, humidity, and season, and to achieve the artist’s physical sensation. Rather than leaving the spacing and distance between objects as bare canvas, by painting them white, what might otherwise appear infinite becomes illuminated by light and transforms into something finite.
The ground as light affects the figure, and the relationship between both becomes increasingly rich, expressing the lingering resonance of space in harmony with objects.
