This time, biscuit gallery will be hosting a solo exhibition by Yumeno Goto titled “Nos sumus luna, Vmbra luceat” (We are the moon, shadow to emit light).
Yumeno Goto is an emerging artist who graduated from Joshibi University of Art and Design in 2019 and completed her master’s degree in oil painting at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts in 2022.

To date, Goto has created painted works that shine light on innocent people who, despite being oppressed, continue to struggle and fight against negative emotions. A religious and fantastical world unfolds, but Goto states that this is “not a fantastical world as an escape,” and through the works, “I would be happy if people could feel the pain of people, what they are trying to protect, and their strength.”
Goto’s works, which are particular about material quality, possess deep depth and heaviness despite being flat works. At times, actual nails are driven into the canvas, and his ideas and techniques are unique.
【Artist Statement】
In ancient times, priestesses, now considered unclean in modern society, were revered as sacred and engaged in prostitution in temples during religious rituals.
This is before sex came to be regarded as profane.
In Japan, too, folk priestesses were once called wandering priestesses, traveling to various places and performing dances and sexual services.
In ancient times, because only women’s power was said to give birth to children, this magic was revered as sacred,
but soon after it became clear that men were necessary for procreation, and women were oppressed as possessions, continuing to the present day.
Particularly in modern Europe, prostitutes were assigned the role of impurity and became sacrifices for the salvation of others.
The theme of this exhibition is “prostitution.”
As one ascends from the first to the third floor of the gallery, the women depicted remove their veils and pants, developing in a way that reinterprets rituals of the womb journey and the ritual of life, death, and resurrection.
The women undressing overlap with the myth of Ishtar’s descent into the underworld, in which she removes seven veils and stands naked before the gates of hell.
Holding the bow and arrow as symbols of masculine sexuality and removing white pants, I depict the self-dedication of these women who open their sexuality at the cost of pain and take on the role of shining light to the world.
Dedication is an act of care, healing people’s hearts, and sexuality is always present there, existing as a symbol of oppressed the weak.
The title of the exhibition reads, “We are the moon, shadow to emit light.”
The moon symbolizes femininity, the sun symbolizes masculinity, representing yin and yang.
The moon cannot be seen on Earth without the sun’s light, but without the moon, the sea would not be born. Tides would not occur.
The world is often discussed in terms of binary oppositions such as light and shadow, good and evil, heaven and earth, life and death, but I believe that crossing these boundaries, making them ambiguous, and blending black and white brings harmony to the world.
While the paintings depict a fantastical world, I am not inviting viewers to the “other side” of the world, but rather am conscious in creating them such that the paintings are coming toward “this side” of the world. Through the strong material quality with uneven surfaces and by depicting the ground and creating scaffolding, I am expressing connection to the world we inhabit now.
It is the stance of my standing in this world and painting pictures.

The purpose of this exhibition is to shed light on those in the shadows and bring about purification for people carrying oppression in the same way.

Born in Tokyo in 1996. Graduated from Joshibi University of Art and Design in 2019. Completed master’s program in oil painting at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts in 2022.
