絵の歴史は人を描く歴史と言っていいほど、いつの時代にも人が描かれ、そしてそれらは 同じ種の生物を描いているとは思えないほどに変化に富んでいます。なぜなら、単なる人の 外観を描いてきたのではなく、直接は目に見えない時代や地域の価値観、思想に敏感に反応し描いてきたからに他ならないからです。

The history of painting can be said to be the history of depicting people. In every era, people have been depicted, yet these depictions are so varied that they hardly seem to represent the same species. This is because artists have not merely depicted the external appearance of people, but have responded sensitively to the values and ideologies of their times and regions—things invisible to the naked eye—and painted accordingly.

그림의 역사는 사람을 그리는 역사라고 할 수 있을 정도로, 어느 시대든 사람이 그려져 왔으며, 그것들은 같은 종의 생물을 그렸다고 생각할 수 없을 정도로 변화에 풍부합니다. 왜냐하면 단순히 사람의 외모를 그려온 것이 아니라, 직접 눈에 보이지 않는 시대와 지역의 가치관, 사상에 민감하게 반응하여 그려온 것이기 때문입니다.
